TAXI In-Car Cameras help scam battle

Phantom feature in this weeks Stockport Express, with a feature on our IN-Car Cameras, It follows a story on the conviction of two brothers, for committing crash for cash scams in Manchester.

Stockport has become one of the first places in the country to introduce CCTV cameras in taxis in a bid to clamp down on 'crash for cash' scams.

Reddish vehicle tracking firm Phantom has been given per-mission to sell and install cameras for the borough's cab drivers, after recent changes to the law made it legal for CCTV to be installed in vehicles.

They are fitted at the top of the windscreen near the rear view mirror. Sales boss Dave McIntyre says the scheme has been so popular with local drivers that the firm is now rolling out across the country.

The cameras film constantly and are able to detect if the vehicle has been in a collision and saves the footage.

The family-run firm specialises in vehicle tracking as well as vehicle alarms, engine re-tuning and driving accessories.

Dave said; "Insurance premiums for taxi can be absolutely huge - anything up to £5,000 and on average about £1.000.

" Scam crashes push the premiums up for everyone.

"If someone goes into the back of them, then they have evidence of what happened.

"The cameras show the driver, passengers and what's going on outside.

"The intention is to put a stop to crash for cash scams as it will also dispel bogus claims. Our intention is to run it nationally."
